Steve’s MFA thesis created color film photography in medium format cameras to explain a narrative that includes form and the perception of abandonment.
With meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to excellence, Steve created elevated color works that showed the built environment to be far more than what is visible.
“In Indianapolis street scenes, buildings that we confront every day for years on end seem to be abandoned, yet they are not. We invent a story to describe our feeling about an unchanging façade and an expected return daily to what we are familiar with. But abandoned these buildings are not. I began this journey while driving throughout the core of the city in the 1990s.
I realized after 12 years of city living that most buildings that seemed derelict actually were maintaining a stasis that put the lie to some flecked paint or minor water damage. Most buildings were protected from rot by owners who pay taxes, commit to safety and even have interior uses that are unseen to the drive-by audience. My work remains a beacon of inspiration and I am adding to it with different narrative inflection points.”
Steve can guide your social sites with leading images, weekly updates or one-off posts.
“Sometimes the fusion of imagination and expertise eludes your staff even with excellent skills and assets — some workshopping of ideas and quick production can enrich your communication projects.”
